A critic-y circle?

So, after talking to Jessica and also needing some critique myself, I was wondering, could we set up some kind of critic's circle, a group of people willing to proofread other's assignments/personal statements/CV's etc?

Anyone interested?

That's a good idea! Although most people on here seem to do English and I do geography so not sure how well it would work for me...

It's a good idea. I will need a lot of help with how to do my thesis! So we could perhaps have "thesis support" in here too :p

However, I study biomedical science, so I'm not sure if I will be able to fully critique say, your work Luci, or orangensaft's work, because I just don't know enough about law or geography.

I think it's a brilliant idea. I think that even people who study something completely different can still comment on how coherent an essay/thesis is.

That's true. I suppose we don't necessarily need one another to comment on the actual content specifically :)

I would love to establish this sort of thing! It's always interesting to see what the other mooks are working on.

I'd be quite happy to read things either bioscience-y or just check for flow.

Any creative writing types want to read my short story? I'm not finished it yet, but I'm hoping I will be by Tuesday - it's unlikely to be the final draft, but still. I'm hoping to send to to a competition that's rather harsh and painfully specific so any kind of input would be nice!

We can have content-specific proofers or just wording/grammar/ coherance proofers!

I'm so glad this actually garnered interest. I expected it to be buried :P

Agreed ; checking spelling and grammar doesn't rely on anybody having detailed knowledge of whatever the topic is,just whether everything flows logically and has the right "to/too/two" etc. I think it's a great idea - obviously people have to be happy with having their work radished in public, but other than that, great idea Luci!

Woop! So maybe if we put requests out like:

Deadline (Not for the peice, but for the time you need it back): Monday

Topic: Creative Writing

Type of critique needed: Coherence

Then people can just respond if they have the time/knowledge?

Sounds like a plan!

Just to clarify-people are going to post their stuff in this thread and not by pm? Because the latter then relies on one person, whereas posting on the thread means everybody who has the time can jump in with suggestions as well as the person who has volunteered to read it all.

I was thinking E-mail or PM, but if on here works for peope then sure. I'm a bit iffy about posting essays on here as it's public and I don't want my work being stolen, though :/ (Although if anyone is actually lazy enough to steal my work then they deserve the third class degree it will eventually get them, I'm not that good haha)

I definitely think email or PM, the plagarism checkers could flag up the thread otherwise and we don't want people getting accused of cheating! Also the work stealing thing.

May I be the first to request a proof-read for the final draft of my essay?

Deadline: Tomorrow evening. At the latest, Tuesday morning.

Topic: Essay on linguistic performativity of gender and sexuality.

Type of critique needed: Coherence.I should mention that I like people to be really, really harsh when they read my work and pick up every tiny flaw they see so that I can make it really good.

Hello again mooks...

Who's up for proof-reading a 2500 word essay on 'Isolation and communication in three Gothic texts'?
Deadline for sending it back to me is Tuesday, as always, please rip it the fuck apart, I like people to be very, very harsh and critical so I can improve as much as possible.

Vic, I'd be happy to read it through. I read quickly and am very fussy about syntax and grammar.

What is the best way to give feedback? What have other people done? I tried to make annotations in a programme called Okular but then realised you can't save the notes.

You can add comments in Word (and I reckon the same goes for Open Office). :)
