Why guns are not to be used to do any body piercings, including ears

Total 6 months healing time because your ears don't have very good blood circulation in them, like belly button piercings, which takes them longer to heal. Also you had crappy studs in, most peoples piercings wont heal very well if they have anything other than surgical steel in them, and even then some people have issues with that materialand have to switch to bioplast. It would have also taken solong to heal because you have it pierced with a gun, as explained in the beginning of this thread.
The other issues with guns (even if they are disposable) is you can get a micro spray of blood that you can't see effectively spreading disease and germs about.

Huh. I suppose the blood thing is more dangerous to the piercer isn't it?

That would explain that when i finally went from the original up a size it healed so much faster. Stainless steel. I'm never getting shit besides that again...

The danger is that there will be micro-droplets of other people's blood on that gun and they've just punched a hole in your ear.

How do blood diseases transfer? Open wounds.

I was gonna apply for a job at Claire's. When I read the job description though it said I'd have to be "trained" to pierce ears. Fuck that...

I am too lazy to read it all through, but I agree with all that has said this is a brilliant thread. I know piercing guns are not hygienic, nor are they good. All my holes have taken years to become fully healed and can still get infected. The latest I got(my third hole) is alright now, but was bleeding and oozing for three months after they told me it would be fine to take out the piercing. So. I really want to go try a needleplace next time. But unfortunately, it's really expensive and I have an ongoing phobia of needles. So piercings for me has been put on a hold. :(

Well at least you're sensible and say'I can't afford it so I'll just not get it done' a lot of people just think I can't afford it but I'll still get it done with a gun even though I know it's a load of crap.

I got my lobes pierced, twice each, with guns. The first was when I was about 11, so pretty much 18 years ago, and everyone just went to a jewelers to get their ears pierced then. I lived in a small town, and no-one had tattoos so this was normal. Same with the second ones.

I did have my helix pierced in Claires....oh about 12 years ago now, and it never healed properly, and in fact I have a weird bump on the back of my ear now from it.

I have my nose pierced too but it was with a needle. Painful, yes, scary yes (I'm terrified of needles!) but healed quicker and the guy who did it was great. It's the same place I get my tattoos done and I know they're good, hygenic and all.

But, I really didn't know guns were bad for your ears, this has opened my eyes so thanks for that!

Oh wow! gives me the creeps to read this now.

When I was a dumb teen I got my ears pierced with a gun 4 times and even got 3 nose piercings total done with a gun at ajewellery shop!disbelief
Luckily there was no health problems, guess I was lucky.

AllI cared about was that it was 4 times more expensive to get a professional to do it properly.

Its good this is a sticky, hopefully nobody else will go and get themselves "shot" if they want piercings.

When I was tiny (like 3 years old) my parents allowed me to get my ears pierced, with a gun. My sister is nearly two years older than me, and she had hers pierced at 5 so, of course, I wanted mine done, too. In hindsight, I really can't pretend I agree with them giving in to that (yes, I pestered them, but I was also a small child whose parents were able to say no to other demands of mine...). The ear piercings, luckily, were successful and uneventful, but I took the earrings out after a fairly short time. At 3, I was too little to understand that, even though it hurt, they had to be cleaned, and also released from the mass of red ringlets that was accumulating on the earring backs, because the "piercist" had said that it's best to twiddle them around to keep them free, as if that's not asking for infection.

Anyway, I had them re-pierced when I was a little older (about 6, I think) in the same way...only this time, the gun jammed on my ear. I don't think I need to describe just how much it hurt when the "piercist" (read: hairdresser) let go of the gun while she fetched cotton wool to mop up the blood running from my ear, leaving it dangling from my lobe. Being the little soldier that I was (and also, a child that didn't understand the risks), I allowed her to do my other ear...only to discover that the gun was damaged, when it did the same thing again.

The lady threw the gun in the bin in front of me and told me that she was never piercing ears again (when my cousin went to get his ear pierced, not realising that he was going to the same lady, she explained that she gave up because of a little girl who was really hurt by the damaged gun, so I guess she really did stop, which is a blessing for others!). I kept the earrings in, because they'd been painful enough for me to treasure them and, fortunately, they healed well...despite persistent earring-twiddling.

On the weird side, my parents allowed me to have a second piercing in each lobe when I was 10, and a third in each when I was 11, all done with a gun. I had no idea how dangerous this was, because I was just told that it was that one piercing gun that was faulty, not that they were generally dangerous.

The first I knew of piercing with needles was when I went to have the top of my left ear pierced, expecting a gun. This piercing was by a really shady tattooist/scratcher (Picklechops, if you're reading...remember Scorpio tattoo studio? Yep...him :S) , but at least he did it with a needle, I guess, and it came out well. I gave up on him very quickly when he pierced my navel...

...when I was 14. I was sat up for the whole procedure, so I'm very lucky that it was straight, for a start...

Anyway, yeah...As a 25 year old woman looking back on all of this, I am completely bewildered as to why the adults in my life at the time didn't refuse to give their permission to the piercists, particularly to those wilding piercing guns, and also why they did not teach me how to look after my piercings... but hey, if I produce any Mooklets, they'll know all about piercing safety and care from a mum who looks like a tackle box exploded on her :P

xxx Eve

*ahem*
I most certainly did not get my ears done in Claire's with a gun, and I DEFINITELY never, ever so much as dreamed of twiddling them every night as they told me to, then acted all proud thinking that I was being mature and responsible. Honest.

Half the problem (most of the problem) is that places who pierce with guns tell you that it's perfectly safe and ok to do it that way. They make it sound like piercing with needles is the problem and that guns are hygienic and quick. People who know no better see piercing and tattoo parlours as dens of iniquity, scary places where guys on harleys and girls who have questionable morals frequent.

Basically, until the people who regulate piercing places realise that guns are not the fantastic things they are made out to be the education won't be out there. It's up to us to try and explain the risks of guns to people.

Personally, I've never got up the courage to actually say to anyone in Claires "do you realise what you're about to do" though.

Hmm, although I could hand out fliers about needles being better outside our local Claire's one day...
Hehe, I would probably get escorted out of the shopping centre by security though.

lol yeah you can. I have my ears pierced with a gun, but to be fair I was only 7, and 11 when I got my nose pierced with one. It's only been the last few years that I realized how bad they are. I've heard of people getting their nipples done with them!!! All I have to say is owwwwwww

WHAT!? People actually use the gun to pierce nipples? That's sick. The gun is sick in general but THAT is sick. That made me feel ill! :P

I used to pierce ears in Claires Accessories, we used the studex gun though that was only on the lobe, as for thr upper ear, using on cartilage would be completely wrong! thought you get sillys doing it alot :/

before I knew about how shit guns are I went and got my nose done with one, yes I got the dreaded nose bump and yes, it got infected, and yes I'd DEFINITELY never get another piercing with a gun.
but, it's all healed up now and was only about a year ago.

Wow im so very glad I read this thread..I always wondered why guns couldnt be used anymore.
Thinking about it when I got my ears done bout 10 years ago, they used this big scary looking gun and the butterfly backings on the earrings were WAY too tight. Not to mention infection after infection..jaysus. The same when I got my nose pierced 5 years ago...whopping gun! And ugh the infection...

Thank you soo much for posting this thread as I was thinking of getting a second set of piercings on my ears..and im very well informed now! Thank you!

Needles are the way forward!
Also it's a nicer pain, well I think it is anyway, but I like pain.

I think I had my ears done with a gun. They're not centered somehow... I was two and they had two people, one on each side, to do both ears at the same time. The left lobe's hole is closer to my face and the right side is centered right.

I hate guns! When I were little I got my lobes pierced with a gun, they ended up swelling up and getting infected and I had to go on antibiotics for a while to help them go down. Also, they used two different guns and one ear was MUCH worse than the other. They've virtually closed up now and I don't think I'm going to wear jewellery in them ever again.

I actually want to make anti-piercing gun posters and attack any Claires' Accessories shops I see with them, I really hate the buggers.

Your aunt pierced your ears at the doctor's office?! What's having small ears got to do with anything!? This just sounds ridiculous.

I've heard of both apples and potatoes, and both freak me out. I think I'd prefer a potato, though... Those apples are sneaky bastards, what with their fruity acids and such.

I got my lobes done with a gun at age ten. Hated it. Then I uh... Pierced my own cartilage. Yes - bad, bad idea, especially since I just had (sterile) syringe needles. I did a shoddy job, hesitating like an idiot and slowly pushing it through instead of pushing it through quickly and actually cutting a hole. I think I just sort of tore it instead. It didn't last, but the swelling went down quickly once I took it out, and now it's just a wee bit thicker than my other ear.

At least I didn't get around to giving myself snakebites. :S

I feel like such an idiot now. I got my cartillages pierced about a month ago, and I went to Claire's because I thought it would the most trustworthy place to go, instead of some random tattoo parlour in the high street that I knew nothing about and wouldn't be able to research beforehand. Admittedly I did already know that guns aren't good for piercings so I was a bit taken aback when I saw it whipped out of it's box, but I just told myself 'they're ear piercing specialists, surely they know what they're doing otherwise they would have gone out of business years ago.' I also got my lobes done with a gun and I had no problem then. It's only recently that I've been doing some research on Claire's piercings, and quite frankly I'm amazed that they're still allowed to do it!

Thankfully I've yet to have any proper infection - at the worst my right ear swelled up and hurt quite a bit, but it only lasted a couple of days and could have been far worse. Still, at least when I get second holes on my lobes, I'll know to go somewhere that uses needles. I just do not want to take the risk! I've also stopped using the saline solution Claire's gave me and made up a sea salt solution instead, as the stuff Claire's give you is alcohol-based and not really all that helpful.
