Capulett's mobile phone thread for all your communication queries.

Hello!

So this thread is in the similar vein to Alka's mega helpful Lush thread. I've worked at The Carphone Warehouse for just over a year now, and in that time I've picked up an (a sometimes scary) amount of knowledge about handsets, common problems with certain handsets, hints and tips and how to handle networks.

Anything to do with a network specific offer (like Vodafone freebee's or Orange phone fund) I can't help much with, since Carphone don't apply them, but everything else I can give you a hand with.

For international mooks, I won't know much about networks and tariffs but if I can I  can help with general phone biz.

It'll help me practice my skillllz and hopefully some of you find this helpful.

Hmm, ok. Why does my phone sometimes echo my own voice back to me? My old phone did that too. It doesn't happen that often but when it does it's really distracting. ); Thanks.

From my understanding of it, (and I'm not an engineer or qualified with the proper tech side of it, we have chaps called The Geek Squad as part of the service plan we sell out and they know more about this than me!) old landlines used to have a 2 wire circuit and mobile technology has now changed that to the 4 wire circuit. If the circuit is out of balance it can cause 'leaks' which gives you the echo effect. There's also a hybrid reciever built in that purposely leaks so you can essentially hear what the other person is saying.

As far as I know there's no way for yourself to fix it, but if it is causing massive problems I would go see a specialist :)

That doesn't make a huge amount of sense to me, but thanks! It's not really a big problem as I normally just explain, hang up and redial, but once it happened while I was calling up about a job so I didn't want to do that and I'm sure I sounded very retarded because I was so distracted. D; Thanks again!

Oh my, exactly! It happens to me too and I hate it! I've always wondered why it only happens sometimes and often even starts mid-call! I hate it because my voice sounds fucking creepy coming from the phone. >:/

I would ask several questions about my phone but exactly what's wrong with it... Namely that it's not toddler-proof!!

Haha sadly most aren't.

The new Nokia Lumia phones with Windows 8 have a good app thingy (very technical of me there) called 'Kids Corner' - it basically has a password and locks the rest of your phone bar the apps that you've selected for your child to play with. So your sprog can't accidently call or text people or run up a massive bill on your 3G. It's pretty nifty.

There's another cause for that as well - if the person you're calling has you on a speakerphone or some kind of external loudspeaker, and leaves the phone by it,it could pick up your voice from the phone as well as theirs and echo it back. It's the same principle as guitar feedback ; when you see Matt Bellamy shove his guitar right up to the stage monitors to make it squeal and screech even better, that's what's going on.

Oh, I forgot to say:

Carphone are independent, so any advice I give out will be completely independent. We're not biased to any particular network or phone or anything, so anything I say is to benefit you chaps rather than plug stuff!

Oh my goddd please help me Kristydink. I need to cancel the contract on my old phone. I got my new phone in September, so I definitely should have done it by now. But how?! The phone thing they make you call is so fucking useless, it's just endless cycles of automated stuff that is completely irrelevant. And I've spent hours trying to find something on the website but to no avail :( there's even a tmobile shop near me, but it is ALWAYS completely packed, like can't move kind of packed, and they seem to have two people working there at any one time o_O is there some magic way of cancelling my contract without having to become a sardine or run up a massive fucking phone bill?

Knives: The best way sadly to check upgrade dates is to phone up your network. However if you got it from a Carphone store a good sales assistant should be able to check your transaction history and deduce it from there or sometimes if we put your details in the system it will tell you the date. If you would like me to check personally for you I would need your surname, postcode, mobile number and what network you're on. Otherwise, I'm sorry chick but you'll need to ring!

Liv: Cancelling is a nasty thing when it comes to it and networks don't want you to do it, that's why they make it so hard. You will need to phone up t-mobile but if you phone customer services on a t-mobile phone (call 150) it is free and won't hike up a massive bill for you. Don't go into shops like phones 4 u to do it because they charge you frankly too much money. Stores like Carphone can't cancel your contract for you because it is your account so you would need to chat to the network anyway.

Hmm perhaps but I've spoken to my parents on speakerphone before and there wasn't that effect

Kristybiddlyboop, you are (as the title of this thread states) knowledgeable in the phone department, and I am useless with knowing about suchlike so I would like some help.

I currently have an iPhone 3GS, which is old and has mysteriously stopped functioning properly (we're not really sure why, I went on holiday with it and when I got back it had stopped working, blah blah), but I get to upgrade in a couple of weeks and I can't decide what phone to choose.

I don't really want another iPhone, but I can upgrade to 4S free of charge, so I guess if I can't find anything else I like I'll probably go for that. I'm really fussy about phones, so I had a go on my brother's Samsung and didn't like it. My boyfriend has an HTC (Desire?), and our housemate has a Google Nexus 4, but I don't like either of those either.

I do want a fancy phone, because I use the internet a lot, and I was thinking about a Blackberry because I know a lot of people who have one and they seem hip and trendy (also, buttons. I like buttons). However, I have heard some bad things about them, like they sometimes delete contacts and messages and things, and I wondered what your professional opinion of them is / if there are any other phones you would recommend / specific models &c. Thank you!

(P.S. I'm sorry this is long and ramble-y, but I'm a little bit scared of technology and yet I would like some of it.)

I am here to help pretty lady!

First off, are you upgrading from your network? If you are I suggest going into some shops (ie, Carphone! hoho) because there are some great deals that are out the now across the board. If you go through a retail store it's more than likely that you can get your pick of handsets, not just what the network are offering to you, and there will be more options for prices, etc. (like phones4u as well, although they are based on commission so always be careful when dealing with them).

I would say don't bother with a Blackberry, at all. Unless you want to go for the Blackberry Z10 which has some brilliant features for the internet and a camera where you can pretty much photoshop your photies on the spot if you want to get creative, (ooer). The older Blackberry models are the phones I ALWAYS get back in store to send away for repair with freezing, deleting things, crashing altogether.

You've tried phones across the board, have you tried a windows phone? There are a range of phones developed for different price plans but still have the same streamlined lovelyness in the menu. You can use versions of microsoft word, link up to your xbox account if you're into that sort of thing and the camera's are of an amazing standard.

The only downfall of windows phones is that you don't get certain popular android and iphone apps (think instagram and games like candy crush) but overall they function the same in the app department, if not better.

If you can get into a shop that has live models, go in and play about with one. I have the 820 and it is absolutely my favourite phone out on the market right now.

Hope that's some guidance!

Thank you very much! You are entirely fabulous!

I wasn't sure whether to upgrade through Orange or Carphone, I think it'll depend on what handsets Orange offer. Also, my mother gets 25% discount on monthly cost from Orange because of the company she works for, so my contract is in her name and she doesn't know if Carphone would offer that. Also, my boyfriend (who I can't refer to by his pseudonym when talking about makes of phone because it would get confusing) used to work for Orange so he's pressuring me a little bit into going through them!

The only apps I currently have are Facebook and YouTube because I don't use anything else, and I don't really use the camera either, so neither of those things are a big deal for me. I was originally going to go for a really cheap crap phone, but I pay quite a lot for my contract and I have a lot of free internet, so I might as well get a phone that can use it!

I didn't even know there were Windows phones! I think I instinctively thought Blackberry because I have had a lot of problems with all of my phones in the past (I am prone to dropping them, especially in liquids) and my father has had a Blackberry for years and never had a problem with it, but I guess he doesn't use his phone very much for personal things.

I'll definitely pop into a shop and see if I can have a fiddle around and a chat with the staff about deals and prices and choice.

We don't do company discounts at Carphone, you'd have to go through network only but definitely see what kind of deals are being offered because if there are 'better' ones with Orange in Carphone then you can ring the network and be like, "HERE, PRICE MATCH BITCHES"

If there's anything else I can help with let me know ! :)
