RE: Alka Answers Your Questions About Lush (and other stuff, if you like).

Ireland's first Lush store was the one on Grafton Street, it's there about ten years now... And like clockwork, for those entire ten years, every few weeks some gobshites would go and buy a tonne of bubble bars and lob them into the fountain across the road. It's quite the sight!

I just bought the massage bar with aduki beans in it to heal my sore and aching muscles, and it feels amazing. It smells absolutely lovely too - I thoroughly recommend it for anyone sporty/deskbound, because it's absolutely wonderful for easing muscle tension.

Coming back here to thank the lovely Alka for the product recommendations, my AOBS and Imperialis came in the post today along with more stuff including the awesome Godiva and Jungle, my hair has never been so curly and soft and bouncy!
And I've only used my cleanser and moisturiser once but my skin's already improving, my colour supplement usually melts off my face in a couple of hours even with powder but now it stays on way longer, thankyou! :)

I'm in a horrid skin pickle :( Winter skin seems to be kicking in already, not helped by having an awful cold recently too. Around my nose manages to be flaky and oily at the same time, I've got so many blackheads on my forehead, nose and chin and I'm getting really horrid red spots on my face and even some really awful ones on my neck. I'm going away for the first weekend in November so I really want to look good (and also I'll be wearing a ton of goth type make-up). Please, Alka, help me fix my horrible skin. (And if you can recommend anything that might make it look and feel any better as a quick fix for tomorrow evening when I go out, that'd be nice too) xx

Mask of Magnaminty for blackheads and spots. I would recommend a moisturiser because if you're flaky you need one but I can't really think of which one to suggest. Possibly the British Nanny, go in and try it, it's a really balm-like texture which is super nourishing. Go for Cosmetic Warrior face mask to calm and clear the red spots quickly, although I can't guarantee they'll be gone by tomorrow! (Grease Lightning will also help with clearing them quickly although again, by tomorrow I'm not so sure). Other than that, grab Let The Good Times Roll cleanser - it's a lovely fine exfoliater which should get rid of your flakies.

Don't forget to take off your lovely goth make up before you go to sleep when you go away!

Thanks Alka, sooo grateful for the quick reply. I so rarely wear make-up that I've been dreading the winter-face/make-up combo because no matter how thoroughly I cleanse at night (and I'm usually a properly good girl about that) having make up sat on my skin during the day generally results in a few little yellowheads. Anyways, thanks again for the advice, I'll let you know how I get on xx

Alka may I ask your opinion on shampoos? I have green (slightly curly) hair and want something which won't strip the colour.
I've tried Cynthia Sylvia Stout (didn't agree with me), Gentle Lentil and Trichomania (a bit rich for my hair as a shampoo but works well as conditioner).

Blousey, Fair Trade Honey, or Curly Wurly. Also, kudos on the green, my hair is being dyed green as we speak.

You'll probably like Vanillary, and possibly Furze out of the new range. But you should go in and give some a sniff because you never know what you'll like!

^ Bliz, I'm like you, I adore Rock Star and Snow Fairy, and would definitely second Alka's advice - I am a Vanillary NUT, it's my favourite thing to wear!

So, as per instructions, I tried Mask Of Magnaminty. I didn't want to buy everything at once cause it's hard to explain to my boyfriend who uses no skincare products at all, why it's worth the money. Anyway, it's amazing. I've been a little put of by the smell before but I'm growing to love it and I cant believe how much better my skin looks in such a short space of time. Alka, you're my hero. :)

SPAM is destroyed. SPAMMERS are banned. Talk of truth and beauty instead.

This is more a question for Tolkien more than for me. He's allergic to any sort of scented shampoos/bodywashes and a lot of plain ones too, he doesn't know exactly what he's allergic to though sadly so I can't go into great detail. I was just wondering if you do have any products aimed at people with a lot of allergies?

Also while I'm at it, one for me. My skin is prone to blackheads and spots, it's also prone to drying out, so I have the odd paradox of dry/oily skin. Do you have products which are able to help one without worsening the other? (also I've only ever used Lush bathbombs, so I'm a bit of a Lush virgin here)

I'm just about to head to bed so this'll be very quick. Without knowing what he's allergic to (it's unlikely he's allergic to scented products as a whole. Is he OK with body lotions and whatnot? It could be a foaming agent issue) it's hard to recommend anything. As with most things I'd suggest hitting up a shop, and if his reactions to things aren't too severe, either trying stuff in store or taking samples.

^ Looks like I'll be taking samples and allergy testing him then, thanks anyway! Also, love that you're a "Lush Guru".

Yeah maybe it would be a good idea to get a professional allergy test done, if it's really bothering him. It's just than even "unscented" shower gels have an ingredient called "perfume" that can really be anything. I think it's much more likely that he's one of the sad few who are allergic to SLS. There are a couple of soaps he could have a go at in Lush, and if you explain that you suspect an SLS allergy, they'll give you a sample of it. Figs and Leaves would be my choice.

As for your skin, it's not so bizarre. Try Angels on Bare Skin to clear it up and balance the oily/dryness and then crack on with Imperialis, or Celestial I think.

Went to Lush today, lusted (Lushted?) after all the jazzy new Christmas stuff, and then went to look at the new perfumes.

OH MY GOD THE NEW PERFUMES.

I never thought I was a massively perfumey person... I really fell for Old Delhi Station last year and wear it most days, but I don't really go mad for perfume. Today the lovely York Lushies (whom I know embarrassingly well now...) talked me and Austerlitz through all the jazzy new perfumes, and they are AMAZING. I've never gone absolutely wild for a scent like I did today. Monsieur fell really hard for The Voice Of Reason, which I loved too, but I loved Flower's Barrow even more. So we both bought each other a little bottle for our anniversary presents :D

We keep sniffing each other and it's getting a bit peculiar.

We can have a coupley-perfume-date and it'll be sexy and confusing because we won't know who smells the deliciousest!

We would begin the date by blinding one another permanently... just to spice things up a bit.

Aww, I thought Austerlitz would like Voice of Reason (I remember his Soak and Float scent-praise). I am seriously enamoured with Devil's Nightcap, but they are an absolutely beautiful range.

I have another question! I've been using AOBS for about 3-4 weeks now and my spots have calmed down a bit, they're still appearing, I'm working on my diet but I still get oiliness and spots on my forehead, cheeks and chin, are there any other cleansers that would work better than AOBS?

You might find Herbalism better for you. It's still very gentle, but a bit more astringent so it should clear up the oiliness a bit.

I would give it until the end of the AOBS though, skincare changes can never be immediate.

^I know this isn't a Lush thing, so sorry about that, but the best facial cleanser I can think of for any type of skin is 'washing' it with oil once a day and then rinsing it off. Seriously, it sorts out oiliness and spots and stuff, and makes your skin feel great, even though it does sound a bit odd :) There are various different types of oils you're supposed to use, though I've used coconut oil and olive oil (separately) and they both worked.

There is that, and that's the main principle behind Ultrabland but some people prefer actually washing their face, with water-based cleansers or foaming cleansers.
