RE: I hate fake specs!

While I think Mimble might have been a bit harsh in her response, I can completely understand why she was upset in the first place. I don't think this is about having valid opinions, it is about stating relevant opinions.

For example: My brother died. Stating that it was a good thing that I inherited his stereo could of course be a valid point, but it's not really relevant considering the overall scenario is it? And it would be a statement that would hurt and offend immensely, reminding me of my loss.

As for the other examples, yes I do indeed weigh my words before stating my opinions on discrimination to a victim of racisms, and my views of domestic abuse in front of someone I know to be a victim of it. And so on and so forth. The reason I do this is because when you've been through something that is traumatic and hard to live with, you simply do not have the distance and resources needed to deal with said topic with emotionless cool reason. It is very easy to say something that might hurt, and I generally think it is best to avoid hurting other people.

Just because I have an opinion doesn't mean that I have to state it in every situation. Quite often, using some tact is preferable.

@Irilar Tell me how praise of things that help people is insulting? Praising aids is a whole different kettle of fish than saying "oh dear, my brother's dead, but hey! I get his stereo! 8D". I don't see how praise needs tact. And the other examples were just to emphasize a point, ok? I did not say that I say "Hey, racism's really bad, awww you were a victim of discrimination, oh dear, that's not very nice. Racism's a horrible thing. Let's go out for tea!" Despite popular belief, I am not a heartless bitch. This girl at school has started bullying me again. I've reported her twice & all that happens is that she gets suspended (oh dear, what a horrible punishment, a few months of school to sit infront of the tv) then she comes back & it starts all over again. So to come on here and have Mimble imply that my opinion is invalid and tell me that praising aids is "hurtful and vacuous", was, what one would call "the straw that broke the camel's back."

@Mimble "Ok, figured it out. Coming from a ''normal person'' point of view, I think what you said is patronising. Awwww, poor lil disabled girl - but isn't she lucky to have a wheelchair?!"

I find THAT insulting and patronising. I do not speak or think in the tone of a patronising brat and I am offended that you would assume that I do without personally knowing me. Also, yes, you are lucky to have a wheelchair. Before chairs with wheels were invented people in that situation were either killed or left to die young as a "mercy" or because they were a "disgrace" to the family for not being "perfect" or they were entirely dependent on others for mobility which was often difficult when the people became adults and was probably horribly embarassing. So, yes, you are very lucky to have a wheelchair.

Ok. I AM lucky to have a wheelchair, if you say so.
And I'm very tired of this.
I love this forum, I'm happy here, and I DO NOT want to cause trouble.
I didn't mean to be the straw that broke the camel's back, I apologise for not being aware of your circumstances. I didn't know you were being bullied, although trust me, you're not the only one ;)
Also, just a side note, I'm NOT bullying you. Really.

By the way, do you think being disabled is not horribly embarrasing?
(If you'd like, I'll give you a list of things I go through day-to-day, trust me, it's shameful!!)

Oh and don't even get me started on some of the things people do you a young woman on a scooter :D bullying? It's a whole other world :D

I'm sorry, Mimble, because I like you a lot and I don't want to leap on the offensive, but I do agree with Punk Rock Princess at this point. What you have to go through on a daily basis must be awful, it would be impossible for others to put themselves in your place and I honestly admire you a lot for going through what you do and still being a pretty darn positive person. Duly understood and considered :)

But these aids are designed to make your life easier, right? And people with an understanding of what you go through -if not your condition then some of its physical manifestations- have made the effort and taken the time to design and make these things so that, even if your life isn't made easier, then its quality is improved. They enable you to do things you might not otherwise be able to do. They save effort, face and potential pain and stress.

However unpleasant it may be to have to use these things and, for some, to be reminded every time they use them that certain things are impossible without them, the point of them is to help liberate you as far as they can, and that is surely a positive thing. Surely you must admit that it is objectively better to have these things than not, even if it's absolutely fucking awful to have to use them? I think that's all PRP meant, and that's all I mean too.

Thankyou Annis darling, I appreciate what you're saying.
I didn't mean this to turn into a fight, I maybe got a bit defensive. It's not much of an excuse but I'm finding it bloody hard to cope right now and I'ma teensy bit touchy :D

I still stand by my opinion that mobility aids, whilst useful, suck. They do make life easier, yes, but they still suck!!
But I apologise for any offense caused. (coincidentally I wrote "stand by my onion" at first...)

Ups, Mimble, I deleted the post you thanked me for.

I just want this whole debate to end, so that we can all go off to discuss weird porn and such.

It is odd when an argument on this forum is going nowhere. I don't get involved because I don't want to upset anyone, and I don't like conflict in general. It seems to have a pattern to it, involving a spiral of deja-vu arguments and points of view. The spiral gets bigger as more and more people feel the need to add their tuppence worth. I want to add mine, but I am scared to offend, and scared of my own lack of eloquance.
What I find the most strange is the way that a moderator has the ultimate power to stop an argument on a forum. In real life, you can't go back and edit what you said, or unsay things. In real life, you can't "close a topic" so forcefully. Irilar, Lolly and myself effectively have the power to "have the last word" on any topic we choose. As so do Kitty Fire and Magda. It is a strange 'power' to have.
This post has no purpose. I was just musing. Yes, a change de sujet is probably for the best.

@Mimble I just meant that it must have been even more embarassing before without any independance of movement, not that it isn't embarrasing anymore. Anyway, I shall say no more, I just wanted to clear that little point up. I apologise for the offense I caused you and you have apologised to me so I shall join in with being happy again *dishes out cakes & tea* =)

COMPLETELY 120% AGREED!
I've worn glasses since I hit puberty (oddly my eyes worked until then, I wonder if that's normal).
Anyway. Freshmen year I got a nice set of thick black rectangular rimmed glasses, and the year after that I got a great pair of oversized tortoise shell.
AND now, the fake specs are all over my high school and I have these dumb girls STILL making fun of my glasses because they're apparently "fake" and I'm "just trying to fit  the trend."
It's outrageous...

Hm. No explanation why this were closed? People were wondering, and since matters seem to have been resolved I think I will open it again.

As Dave pointed out, it's an example of Mimble and PRP's awesomeness that they managed to resolve this in peace and tea.

Well I definitely agree. I find fake glasses to be hurtful. It's making fun of someone without intentionally making fun of them and that's ignorant.
The entire reason people think they look sophisticated in them is based on the stereotype that those who wear glasses are nerds.
If someone has a Drake n Josh moment where there's something wrong with their eye for a reason other than their vision is distorted, then by all means, use glasses. But then you -are- using them and not for fashion.
I wear really thick glasses and can't see a foot in front of my face without them. Over the years I have been limited by them, (swimming, playing sports, going on boats, etc.) and also made fun of. Suddenly they're cool? They're a fashion statement? That seems wrong to me. Now I wear contacts, and have to constantly poke myself in the eye in order for people to actually see my face.
People have tried for a very long time to get glasses to look appealing so the wearer wouldn't feel down about having to wear them in the first place. It's not as big of a deal as walking around with a pair of crutches, but it's like wearing braces, or an eye-patch just for fun. It's offensive to those that need them (although braces would be their own punishment) and it's just kind of messed up.
If the fashionable thing were for people to surgeries to disable their vision, then they would (be crazy, and) have a need for glasses. But until then it's faking a disability and it's not very nice.

1. If I dye my hair ginger is that me making fun of gingers? No. Point invalid.
2. I wasn't aware there was an elitist club for spectacle wearing.
3. If find your comparison to getting eye surgery ridiculous and offensive. Not all fake glasses wearers are dull trend followers who'd cut off a hand if New Look told them stumps were in this season.
4. Needing glasses isn't a disability, if you want to talk about disability talk to mimble (or y'know read the posts above because your statement may seems insensitive in light of the discussion that just happened.)

1. Being ginger isn't a restriction. My point is absolutely not invalid.
2. Yes...people who need them to correct their vision. But it's obviosuly not a club, or people wouldn't wear them for fun.
3. I know, that's what I'm saying. They'd happily look like their vision is impaired, but wouldn't really impair their vision. What I'm saying is that, in a way, wearing fake glasses can be construed as being dishonest.
4. You're right, needing glasses is nowhere near as much of an impairment as needing a wheelchair; but this thread isn't about people riding around in wheelchairs who don't need them.

Being ginger more than likely gets you bullied. That's a restriction.

Why should they be worn by just people who need them? Someone buying a pair of fakes from Claire's doesn't stop the NHS giving a child free glasses.

If you go around telling people you need glasses when you don't that's being dishonest. If people ask and get the reply "I bought them because they look pretty" I don't see a problem? As long as someone isn't gaining from pretending to wear glasses then where is this problem?

True, but calling it a disability still raises my hackles slightly. My great uncle is what I would called disabled because he can't move from the waist down and is braindamaged. Unless there is something else apart from your need for glasses, you are not disabled and neither is any other glasses wearer. I'm not faking what happened to my uncle by putting plastic frames on my face.

I understand feeling bitter towards people who now wear fake glasses when they would once upon a time make fun of you but casting off all fake-wearers as ignorant dullards simply because they want to find another way to decorate themselves is over the top to me.

I think glasses becoming more accepted in mainstream fashion is a good thing because it helps de-stigmatise wearers. It's sad that they are bullied in the first place but fake glasses becoming trendy is the next best thing to deleting stupid sods who say things like "four eyes" off the face of the earth.

I dunno, I just think this outrage over something that seems trivial to me is a waste of energy.

When you put it that way, I can agree with you, and I see how it's over-the-top to complain about it, because it isn't really that big of an issue, (it's not like I'm walking around thinking 'I hate fake glasses' 24/7 or anything,) it's just...that's what this thread is about so it's expected that you center in on it, however miniscule it may be.

In short, I see your point and agree; but it still bugs me because it IS a restriction and it's just strange that it's become fashionable. It's more annoying than offensive.

Plus...maybe this is a cultural difference but I have never heard of people making fun gingers. xD;;
